When Boris arrived in the United States from Ukraine through HIAS Immigration & Citizenship more than 20 years ago, his primary goal was to find a job so he could support his family. Since then, he has helped other new refugees secure employment at the same company he has worked at for the last 23 years.

A few months into her new marketing role, Kim sent an email to her JVS Career Counselor Sandra Saltzman, thanking her for her guidance, encouragement and expertise during her 1.5-year job search.

It’s probably no surprise that jobseekers face emotional challenges while looking for that next position.

“I think a lot of it is the employment marketplace today. People feel qualified and apply to positions, get interviews, maybe second interviews, but never hear from anyone again,” said JVS Career Counselor Sandra Saltzman. “That is a frustration."

Jacob connected with the JCFS Chicago Duman Opportunity Center through his school. Jacob loves cars and has been working on them throughout his life with his family and friends. He hopes to become an auto mechanic, but has struggled to achieve the necessary academic requirements to enroll in an auto mechanic program.
