Jessika has been in the JVS Youth Program for about two years after dropping out of high school. Although she tried on her own to find a job, she was unsuccessful. Through weekly meetings, her JVS employment specialist found that her two biggest barriers were her living situation and her mental health. She was quickly connected to a mental health support group. She had also discovered the Paul Simon Job Corp, a no-cost education and career technical training program that helps young people improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. With the help of her JVS employment specialist she decided to enroll in the program and after 8 months she earned her high school diploma. Her employment specialist began to meet with her weekly and set a short-term goal to get a part-time job in order to gain work experience. After a few months of meetings, applications, and interviews, Jessika landed a job as a concierge. She plans to move into her own place by next year. Throughout this process Jessika has become more focused, confident and self-reliant, all leading to a path of independence!
