Office Job Brings Growth and Independence

As a recent high school graduate, Daniel turned to JCFS Chicago’s Duman Opportunity Center for help finding employment. He began working with an employment specialist to explore opportunities that would highlight his strengths, build his confidence, and prepare him for long-term success.

Daniel didn’t have any work experience and wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. His employment specialist worked with him on career exploration; they visited several different types of businesses and talked to employers about the roles within their organizations.

Daniel initially thought he wanted to work in a healthcare setting because his mom was a nurse at a local hospital, but he quickly realized that the environment was too fast-paced and overwhelming for him. Daniel eventually discovered that he needed a calmer, quieter environment and felt that an office setting would be the right fit.

With support from his employment specialist, Daniel secured a job at an office, where he plays an important role in the day-to-day operations. His responsibilities include setting up meeting spaces, arranging desks and stocking the breakroom. As his supervisor stated, Daniel helps keep the office running smoothly and creates a welcoming environment for staff and visitors.

While Daniel was excited about this new opportunity, he initially faced a challenge with transportation. Taking the CTA to and from work was something he had never done on his own before. With guidance from his employment specialist, Daniel gained confidence to navigate the CTA and now travels independently to work every day.

Daniel has been successfully employed for over two months and is thriving in his role. He feels proud of his growth and independence.
