Support and Connection Empowers Jobseekers

Even highly experienced jobseekers can benefit from working with career counselors at JCFS Chicago. Each person’s path to employment is unique, and everyone needs different kinds of support.

“Our goal is to empower them to find their next adventure,” said Career Counselor Marcy Miller. “We’re here to support them through that process, whatever that looks like.”

Support can take many forms, whether it’s sharing ideas, providing resources, making connections, or networking, Marcy said.

As the facilitator of a JCFS senior-level networking group, Marcy meets with accomplished jobseekers who appreciate guidance, feedback and critical information to help them succeed in finding their next position.

One such jobseeker is Jordan*, who had used JCFS’s career services in the past and recently returned for more support. Jordan met with Marcy every week for one-on-one coaching and also participated in the networking group.

“I threw myself into every piece of advice, all carefully and sensitively presented,” he said.

Jordan’s hard work paid off recently when he accepted a position that aligns with his career goals and values.

“I know that the JCFS networking experience was a major factor in my ability to reach my ultimate goal of transitioning into a position I could be proud of, and which would support my family,” Jordan stated in a letter he penned to Marcy the evening before his first day at his new job. “I am truly excited.”

He said his experience with the networking group exceeded his expectations.

“It is so important in giving people perspective, comfort, and guidance to follow best practices like networking, effective communication, staying engaged, and continual positive framing,” Jordan said.

Marcy credits Jordan’s success to his strong work ethic and his determination to continue doing all the things that are best practiced during his job search.

“He had a vision and stayed positive,” Marcy said. “He networked and was incredible about giving back.”

Jordan said he owes much of his employment success to Marcy’s guidance, both in and outside of the networking group.

He wrote, “You gave me honest feedback. You encouraged me when I was doing the right things. You gave me and the other members of the group options, strategies, and encouragement. You made us feel better about ourselves every week. You celebrated our small steps towards our best selves.”
