H. Debra Levin
Irving B. Harris Leadership Award

JCFS Chicago is thrilled to present the Irving B. Harris Leadership award to H. Debra Levin for her commitment to excellence in serving our community. A former JCFS Board Chair, longtime board member, and current Honorary Board Member, Debra has been a dedicated advocate for JCFS Chicago. Throughout her tenure, she focused on empowering the voice of every board member. Debra has also held a community leadership role with the Jewish United Fund. A partner at Jenner & Block law firm, she is co-chair of their private wealth practice, representing a number of families in the Chicago area and around the country. She has been instrumental in helping her clients meet their own charitable goals, frequently to the benefit of both JCFS and the Jewish United Fund.

Marshall J. Hartman
Marshall J. Hartman
What’s Possible Award

JCFS is excited to recognize Marshall J. Hartman with the What’s Possible Award. After his mother’s death, his father was unable to care for Marshall and his siblings and they were placed in foster homes through Jewish Children’s Bureau, a predecessor to JCFS. Marshall’s foster family played a crucial role in his life, enabling him to reach his personal and professional achievements. He graduated college and law school from the University of Chicago, plus earned a Bachelor of Hebrew Letters. He became an advocate for the right to competent counsel for everyone, including juveniles and those facing capital punishment. His remarkable career as a public defender included writing national public defense standards, establishing public defender offices across the country, publishing commentary on numerous Supreme Court rulings and teaching law school.
