Music and Activism
For this 2-session virtual workshop, we will explore social justice causes and learn how to write a protest song about a cause we are most passionate about!
We will listen to protest music of the past and look at how the songwriters conveyed their powerful message through lyrics, rhythm and melody. Throughout the 2 sessions, we will play games to practice our songwriting skills, while also engaging in discussions about our social justice passions and getting to know one another! The workshop will culminate in a virtual performance of our final musical or lyrical compositions.
No prior experience in songwriting necessary – participants can choose to write a song, poem, lyrics, or melody alone for their final project. This free workshop will be led by Claire Tolman and Jackie Kretchmer, Community Educators at Response for Teens and is open to all high school aged students.
Registration is recommended, space is limited to a maximum of 8 people.
