Parenting in an age of Media and Technology

Being a parent these days can feel like an ongoing assault from different places – the unending needs of kids, and the incessant bad news: local, national and international.  Another hurricane, bombing, or shooting.  How much exposure do your children have to this information and how do you help yourself and your children make sense of it? Explore guidelines that will help you make thoughtful decisions about helping your kids, whatever their ages, grow up in a chaotic world.

9am-12pm Program

Depression and anxiety in older adults often arises in the context of loss: from loss of loved ones, to loss of health and independence, to the contemplation of one's own death. Clinicians working with older adults may overlook the spiritual dimension - broadly defined - that can be a component of depression and anxiety. This session will incorporate both clinical intervention strategies and the spiritual components involved in addressing depression and anxiety, with particular attention to the meaning-making process in late life.

Parenting in an age of Media and Technology

Today’s young people are part of Generation Z – people born after 1999. Parents are raising children in a unique world, as a result of current events and the ever present media in their lives.  What are those events, what impact are they having on the newest generation, and what does that mean about what they need from the parents and other adults in their lives?

Leader: Sarah Casper, M.S.

Parenting in an age of Media and Technology

Technology and its accompanying social media are parts of our everyday lives, and they impact our parenting and our kids’ growth and development.  What is the current knowledge of the impact of technology on kids – their brains and their relationships?  What about parents’ use of technology and our often unconscious role modeling for the young people in our lives?
